Library Documentation - DNS Notify

A common setup for running a cpanel server is for the cpanel server to be the primary DNS and then use a service like as your secondary DNS servers.

If you already have your domains setup and then later need to update a DNS ZONE record you would want the secondary servers to update themselves with the new information instantly and not wait until they naturally refresh their copy of the record. There is no need to make the DNS propagation take longer then absolutely necessary, right?

The term for telling the secondary server to update its copy of the record is called "notify". When you make a change to a zone record on your server it will notify the secondary server that the record has changed. The secondary servers then ask your primary server for the latest version of the record and update themselves accordingly.

By default cpanel is setup to use BIND as its domain name service, these instructions will work on any BIND server regardless of whether it has cpanel on it.

There are 2 relevant settings that I will be describing.

Here is the relevant snippet from my BIND config file. The bind config file is normally located at /etc/named.conf

options {
	directory "/var/named";
	dump-file "/var/named/data/cache_dump.db";
        statistics-file "/var/named/data/named_stats.txt";
    recursion no;
	// servers to be notified when a domain record is updated locally
	also-notify {;;;};
	// servers that are allowed to request local domain info
 	allow-transfer {;;;};

I have only added the lines 6-9 to the config file. The ips that I have listed are the ones that I am suppose to be using for my account. You will need to replace them with the ips you are suppose to use. Make sure you add the lines inside the options { } portion of the file.

Now restart bind and you're ready to rock :-) The next time you update one of your domain's DNS record your secondary servers will be instantly notified and will update their copies. This will reduce the propagation time as much as possible, and that's good for everybody!
